Lancaster plays Colonel Durnford, whose controversial decision to spread his forces contributed to the catastrophe; O’Toole plays Lt. Col. Pulleine, the officer in nominal command. More sombre and morally complex than its companion film, Zulu Dawn is a serious and important war film scored by Elmer Bernstein.
