East Is East | DVD (1999) | Om Puri & Linda Bassett | Damien O'Donnell | New & Sealed

In Salford in 1971, the Khan family is caught between a father’s expectations and his children’s determination to find their own way. East Is East brings humour and tension to a Pakistani-British household, with Om Puri as George Khan and Linda Bassett as his wife Ella.

Directed by Damien O’Donnell and written by Ayub Khan-Din from his semi-autobiographical stage play, this 1999 British comedy drama explores identity, belonging and the pressures of family life. Its mix of domestic conflict and irreverent humour makes it a character-led story with more beneath the surface than its comic moments alone suggest.
