Cry Freedom (1987)

A friendship becomes a commitment to bringing the truth to light in Richard Attenborough's drama set in apartheid-era South Africa. Denzel Washington stars as activist Steve Biko, whose encounters with newspaper editor Donald Woods, played by Kevin Kline, challenge the journalist's understanding of the society around him.

As Woods becomes determined to share Biko's story, his work places both his freedom and his family's safety at risk. Based on Woods' books and adapted for the screen by John Briley, the film brings a personal perspective to a story of political repression, courage and the responsibility to bear witness.
