City of God | DVD | 2002 | Alexandre Rodrigues & Matheus Nachtergaele | Crime Drama | New & Sealed

Two young men follow very different ambitions amid the violence of Rio de Janeiro in City of God. Rocket dreams of becoming a photographer, while Li’l Zé pursues power in the neighbourhood’s criminal world. As the drug trade grows and rivalries intensify, Rocket’s camera offers a different way to see the streets around him and a possible route towards another life.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, this 2002 crime drama adapts Paulo Lins’ novel and follows the changing fortunes of the Cidade de Deus neighbourhood across several decades. Its interwoven stories place youthful ambition alongside the human cost of gang violence, seen through the perspective of a young observer struggling to find his own path.
